Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Summary

A new Osteoarthritis Conceptualisation Questionnaire (OACQ) was developed to assess patient understanding of osteoarthritis. This tool helps evaluate how beliefs about osteoarthritis impact physical activity and treatment choices.

Background:

Patient knowledge and beliefs about osteoarthritis significantly influence physical activity engagement and non-surgical treatment decisions.
A validated tool is needed to assess these complex cognitive frameworks in individuals with osteoarthritis.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and psychometrically evaluate the Osteoarthritis Conceptualisation Questionnaire (OACQ) using an established item bank.
To assess individuals' conceptual frameworks regarding osteoarthritis.

Main Methods:

Online administration of the OACQ item bank to individuals with painful knee osteoarthritis.
Psychometric evaluation using factor analysis and exploratory graph analysis.
Comparison of data-driven models with existing theoretical models for construct validity.

Main Results:

The Osteoarthritis Conceptualisation Questionnaire (OACQ) was developed, comprising 36 items across four domains: Expectations, Context, Physiology, and Conceptual Change.
Data-driven models demonstrated alignment with theoretical models, providing preliminary evidence of construct validity.
The study included 454 participants (64.52 ±9.21 years; 64.52% female).

Conclusions:

The Osteoarthritis Conceptualisation Questionnaire (OACQ) is a novel assessment tool for evaluating osteoarthritis conceptualizations in patients with painful knee osteoarthritis.
The OACQ may be valuable for assessing the effectiveness of pain science education interventions.
Further research is recommended to evaluate scale functioning and test-retest reliability.
