A Program Logic Model (PLM) was developed to guide evaluation of Deakin University
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Rural Health Workforce Development
- Program Evaluation
Background:
- Addressing rural medical workforce shortages in Victoria, Australia.
- Deakin University established a Rural Training Stream (RTS) for its Doctor of Medicine program.
- A place-based approach aims to recruit and train local students for rural retention.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a Program Logic Model (PLM) for the RTS.
- To facilitate collaborative program evaluation and research.
- To ensure alignment with social accountability and rural workforce goals.
Main Methods:
- A stepwise, participatory approach was used over three months.
- Input was gathered through individual submissions and group workshops.
- Data were summarized, reviewed, and validated by participants.
Main Results:
- The PLM development fostered consensus among educators for a new program.
- It established clear objectives for recruitment, training, and professional identity.
- Defined outcomes provide a framework for evaluation and research.
Conclusions:
- The PLM offers a transparent roadmap for the RTS program.
- It enhances communication of program design for rural workforce outcomes.
- Provides a shared foundation for evaluation aligned with strategic goals.
