Summary

Cardiac tumors have a poor prognosis, especially after incomplete surgery. Selectively debulking these tumors may enable chemotherapy initiation in critically ill patients.

  • To present a case of metastatic sarcoma involving the heart in a patient too unwell for chemotherapy.
  • To evaluate the role of debulking surgery in enabling subsequent treatment.

  • A patient with metastatic cardiac sarcoma, unsuitable for initial chemotherapy, underwent a debulking operation.
  • Post-operative chemotherapy was administered following the debulking procedure.

  • The debulking surgery resulted in early and rapid tumor recurrence.
  • Despite recurrence, the patient showed a positive response to subsequent chemotherapy.

Conclusions:

  • Debulking cardiac tumors can be a viable strategy in select patients.
