Background:

  • Effective cancer treatment requires understanding the roles and patient management approaches of the entire oncology team.
  • Currently, a standardized curriculum for fundamental knowledge and skills in collaborative oncology specialties is lacking for trainees.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and evaluate the effectiveness of multidisciplinary oncology education in postgraduate medical training.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted across multiple databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, PsycINFO, ERIC) from July 2021 to October 2024.
  • Included studies reported on the effectiveness of multidisciplinary oncology training for residents and fellows.

Main Results:

  • Of 6991 screened studies, 24 were included. Fifteen studies identified significant gaps in multidisciplinary oncology training across various specialties.
  • Trainees reported limited knowledge outside their core fields and a need for more interdisciplinary education.
  • Nine studies assessed interventions (tumor boards, didactic sessions, rotations, case-based learning), showing significant improvements in trainee knowledge and skills.

Conclusions:

  • Postgraduate medical trainees demonstrate limited formal multidisciplinary oncology training.
  • Educational interventions are effective in enhancing oncology knowledge and skills.
  • There is a critical need for developing standardized multidisciplinary oncology curricula for postgraduate training programs.
