Summary

Accentuating eccentric loading with cluster sets may not significantly improve maximum dynamic strength compared to traditional training. However, this method may help maintain isometric rate of force development during high-volume strength training.

  • Seventeen recreationally active subjects were randomized into AEL (n=9) or traditional (TRAD) (n=8) groups.
  • Both groups trained for 4 weeks, performing back squats and bench presses.
  • The AEL group used weight releasers and CS, while the TRAD group used traditional loading and set structures.

  • Both groups showed significant increases in dynamic strength (back squat and combined 1RM).
  • No significant interaction effects were observed between groups for most strength variables.

  • While AEL paired with CS did not demonstrate superior gains in maximum dynamic strength over traditional methods, it may be beneficial for preserving isometric rate of force development.

  • Consider AEL with CS for maintaining isometric force production during high-volume training phases.
