    Summary

This study reports eleven new cases of laryngeal metastases, the largest single-institution series to date. Melanoma, kidney, breast, and lung cancers are the most common primary sources of these rare laryngeal tumors.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Otolaryngology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Metastases to the larynx are rare but significant clinical occurrences.
    • Understanding the primary sources and common sites of laryngeal metastasis is crucial for diagnosis and management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To report the largest single-institution series of intrinsic laryngeal metastases.
    • To analyze the primary tumor types and anatomical distribution of these metastases.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of eleven cases of intrinsic laryngeal metastases at a single institution.
    • Literature review to consolidate existing case reports.

    Main Results:

    • Eleven new cases were identified, bringing the total reported cases to 83.
    • Cutaneous melanomas were the most frequent primary tumors (45%), followed by renal cell carcinoma (27%), breast carcinoma (18%), and lung carcinoma (9%).
    • The supraglottis was the most common site of metastasis (73%), while the glottis was the least common (9%).

    Conclusions:

    • This series expands the understanding of laryngeal metastasis patterns.
    • Cutaneous melanoma is a significant source of laryngeal metastases, often affecting the supraglottis.
