Comparison of Pain, Anxiety, and Comfort Level After Femoral or Transradial Angiography: A Descriptive Study

Purpose:
The aim of this study was to examine the difference in pain, anxiety, and comfort by catheter site in patients who underwent a femoral or transradial angiography procedure.
Design:
Descriptive research.
Methods:
The study was conducted with 308 femoral and 294 transradial angiography patients. Data were collected between August 10, 2022 and February 29, 2024 using a patient information form, a numerical pain severity scale, the State Anxiety Inventory, and the General Comfort Questionnaire-short form. Catheter site pain was assessed 30 minutes after the completion of angiography, and anxiety and comfort levels were assessed 1 hour later.
Findings:
The difference between the types of angiography according to personal characteristics was significant (p < 0.05). The pain severity of patients with transradial angiography was determined to be 4.766 units higher than that of those with femoral angiography (p < 0.002). The difference in median anxiety values according to angiography type was statistically significant (p < 0.001). The anxiety points of the transradial group were 3.227 units higher than those of the femoral group (p < 0.001). The median comfort points of the transradial group were 2.974 units higher than those of the femoral group, which was a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001).
Conclusions:
The severity of pain, and anxiety and comfort levels of patients undergoing transradial angiography were determined to be higher than those of patients undergoing femoral angiography. This information can be of help to nurses in presenting high-quality care options.
