Activity level and behavioral style in young children.

C H Zeanah, A F Korner, R I Berkowitz

Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, and Allied Disciplines
    |September 1, 1985

    Summary

Objective activity level in children did not correlate with parental perception. Parental perception, however, accurately reflected children's behavioral styles, suggesting parents interpret "activity level" broadly.

    Area of Science:

    • Child Development
    • Behavioral Science
    • Psychology

    Background:

    • Parental perception of children's activity levels is common in research.
    • Objective measurement of children's activity levels can provide valuable data.
    • Understanding the relationship between perceived and actual activity is crucial for accurate behavioral assessment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between objectively measured activity levels and parental perceptions in children aged 4-8.
    • To determine if objective activity levels differentiate behavioral styles.
    • To examine if parental perceptions of activity levels correlate with children's behavioral styles.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized a portable microcomputer activity recorder for 24-hour objective activity level measurement.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Assessed 4-to 8-year-old children.
  • Compared recorded activity data with parental perceptions and behavioral style assessments.
  • Main Results:

    • Objectively recorded activity levels did not correlate with parental perceptions of activity.
    • Objective activity levels did not differentiate children with varying behavioral styles.
    • Parental perceptions of activity level significantly differentiated children's behavioral styles.

    Conclusions:

    • Parental perception of a child's activity level may be influenced by a broader assessment of the child's overall behavior.
    • Caution is advised when using the term "activity level" due to potential variations in meaning based on measurement methods.
    • Parental perception appears more closely aligned with behavioral style than objective activity measurement in this age group.
