    Area of Science:

    • Otolaryngology
    • Surgical Procedures
    • Airway Management

    Background:

    • The long-held belief is that cricothyrotomy frequently results in subglottic stenosis.
    • Recent evidence suggests this view may be inaccurate.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of cricothyrotomy.
    • To assess the incidence of subglottic stenosis following the procedure.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of 203 elective cricothyrotomy procedures.
    • Follow-up examinations of 61 patients six months post-decannulation.

    Main Results:

    • Cricothyrotomy was simpler to perform compared to tracheostomy.
    • No severe intraoperative or postoperative complications were recorded.
    • No evidence of subglottic stenosis was found in any patient.

    Conclusions:

    • Cricothyrotomy is a viable and safe airway procedure.
    • Subglottic stenosis is not a common complication of cricothyrotomy.
    • Voice disturbances are the main drawback, requiring further investigation.
