The digital tourniquet: how safe is it?

J D Lubahn, J Koeneman, K Kosar

    Summary

This study measured digital tourniquet pressure using latex rubber properties. A new method using a Penrose drain with specific markings can consistently control pressure between 250-375 mm Hg.

    Area of Science:

    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Materials Science

    Background:

    • Digital tourniquets are used in medical procedures.
    • Accurate pressure measurement and control are crucial for tourniquet effectiveness and safety.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify the pressure generated by common digital tourniquets (Penrose drain, rolled glove finger).
    • To develop a method for controlled pressure application using a Penrose drain.

    Main Methods:

    • Mathematical modeling of pressure-resistance in latex rubber.
    • Measurement of pressures beneath rolled glove fingers (200-1200 mm Hg) and Penrose drains (100-650 mm Hg).
    • Development of a technique using marked Penrose drains to achieve controlled pressure (250-375 mm Hg).

    Main Results:

    • Rolled glove fingers generated pressures from 200-1200 mm Hg.
    • Penrose drains produced pressures ranging from 100-650 mm Hg.
    • The developed method with marked Penrose drains achieved consistent pressures between 250-375 mm Hg.

    Conclusions:

    • Digital tourniquet pressures vary significantly depending on the material and application.
    • A novel technique using marked Penrose drains allows for predictable and controlled pressure application.
    • This method offers improved safety and efficacy for digital tourniquet use.
