  • Anesthetized female rats received chronic prolactin treatment.
  • Main Results:

    • Whole kidney glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and fluid reabsorption were significantly increased (P < 0.02).
    • Single nephron GFR and proximal tubule fluid reabsorption were also elevated (P < 0.05).
    • Fractional reabsorption was enhanced at the proximal tubular level.

    Conclusions:

    • Chronic prolactin administration enhances key parameters of kidney function in female rats.
    • The observed renal changes mimic those seen in pregnancy and pseudopregnancy.
    • Prolactin may be a key mediator of the characteristic renal adaptations during these reproductive states.
