Environmentally derived Balamuthia mandrillaris contains endosymbiotic bacteria

Balamuthia mandrillaris amoebas harbor viable, pigment-producing bacteria, including Chitinophaga, Inquilinus, and Brevundimonas. This bacterial symbiosis may enable amoeba survival in harsh, nutrient-poor environments.
