EFFICIENCY OF AN INNOVATIVE TROCAR ADAPTER FOR FASTER SILICONE OIL INJECTION IN VITREORETINAL SURGERY: A Comparative

Purpose:
To investigate the efficiency of a novel trocar adapter in silicone oil injection in comparison to the standard tube.
Methods:
The high flow viscous fluid extraction accessory cannula (1362.VFE2, DORC) was compared as trocar adapter with the universal PVC infusion tube (1279.VFI, DORC) to inject five different silicone oils with an injection pressure of 4 bar.
Results:
Injection of 6 mL of Siluron 1000, Densiron 68, and Siluron 2000 was faster with the high flow cannula (21 ± 1, 22 ± 3, and 25 ± 2 seconds) compared with the infusion tube (149 ± 3, 200 ± 3, 266 ± 9 seconds, respectively, P < 0.001). Injection of 6 mL of Siluron Xtra and DORC Silicone 5000 was also faster with the high flow cannula (52 ± 2 and 86 ± 14 seconds vs. 489 ± 5 and 662 ± 13 seconds, respectively, P < 0.001). Feasibility of high flow cannula use in silicone oil injection in standard endotamponading vitreoretinal surgery was confirmed in four eyes from four patients.
Conclusion:
This laboratory study indicates that the high flow cannula, which is designed for oil extraction, is a highly efficient method to accelerate silicone oil injection with a time reduction of roughly 90% for low and high viscosity silicone oils.
