Background:

  • Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) increasingly incorporates endoscopic techniques.
  • Endoscopic modalities are crucial for pre-, intra-, and postoperative management in MBS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess endoscopic training, practice patterns, and proficiency among early-career surgeons.
  • To evaluate current engagement in managing MBS complications and endoscopic bariatric therapies (EBTs).

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among Young-IFSO members (surgeons ≤45 years).
  • The survey collected data on demographics, training, practice, and endoscopic management of MBS complications and EBTs.

Main Results:

  • 273 surgeons from 49 countries responded; 33.8% do not perform endoscopy, and 46.9% lack confidence in managing complications.
  • While EBTs are available in 50% of institutions, only 23.9% of respondents perform them.
  • Endoscopic training was part of the general surgery curriculum for only half of the participants.

Conclusions:

  • Early-career metabolic and bariatric surgeons exhibit limited endoscopic involvement.
  • There is a clear need for structured endoscopic training programs to enhance skills for modern MBS.
