    Background:

    • Ibuprofen is a widely used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
    • Concerns exist regarding potential adverse effects of NSAIDs, including rare but serious conditions.
    • Understanding the safety profile of ibuprofen in a large patient cohort is crucial for clinical practice.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the incidence of serious uncommon illnesses following ibuprofen prescription.
    • To assess the association between ibuprofen use and acute liver or kidney disease.
    • To evaluate the safety of outpatient ibuprofen use in individuals under 65 years.

    Main Methods:

    • A retrospective cohort study involving 13,230 patients from Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound.
    • Patients under 65 years presumed to have taken ibuprofen as outpatients were followed.
    • Hospitalizations within 3 months of an ibuprofen prescription fill were reviewed for serious adverse events.

    Main Results:

    • No instances of serious uncommon illness were definitively attributed to ibuprofen.
