Abstract:
Cochlear implants provide children with congenital or acquired sensorineural hearing loss with an opportunity for speech and language development. Although previous studies have shown that a significant proportion of children requiring cochlear implants have additional comorbidities, few studies have undertaken a detailed analysis of cochlear implant recipient comorbidities into diagnostic categories, to provide a comprehensive picture of the needs and challenges of this unique study population. A retrospective chart review was conducted to identify and categorise comorbidities in 226 cochlear implant recipients. Over half of participants recorded at least one comorbidity, with one third having multiple comorbidities. The largest single group of comorbidities was mental, behavioural and developmental disorders with 23.9 % of participants recording a comorbidity in this category. This study highlights the need for implant centres to take into consideration the additional needs and challenges that comorbidities present. Further research into the outcomes of cochlear implant recipients with comorbidities is required given that this group is often excluded from outcome studies.
