Background:
The sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), is a notorious global pest of tobacco, cotton and many vegetables. The ionotropic receptors (IRs) are an important part of the olfactory system, and the ionotropic co-receptors are essential for many physiological processes in insects.
Results:
In this study, we identified 21 IRs and two ionotropic co-receptors, BtIR8a and BtIR25a in sweetpotato whitefly. The functions of these two ionotropic co-receptors were investigated in this study by conducting tissue expression profiling, RNAi experiments and behavioral studies, and it was discovered that both are crucial in the process of locating host plants for B. tabaci.
Conclusion:
This research offers a clearer insight into the ionotropic receptors of B. tabaci and suggests potential strategies for its management and control. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.
