[Recurrence of pregnancy in adolescence: choice or subjection]

This systematic review of the literature seeks to reveal the factors that lead to recidivism in teenage pregnancies. The data, analyzed by content, reveal that teenage pregnancy is associated with greater risks of late and inadequate prenatal care and worse outcomes in childbirth and the postpartum period. Lack of life projects, unstable personality, low self-esteem, submission to the partner, lack of preventive attitude, antisocial behavior, drug abuse, dysfunctional family, feeling of hopelessness, low confidence, non-white skin color and the lack of assistance programs for adolescents are factors that favor early pregnancy. Early sexual initiation associated with a lack of knowledge about reproductive health and low use of contraceptives, due to a lack of guidance from the family/school or the inefficiency of family planning services, has a strong impact on teenage pregnancy rates. The recurrence of teenage pregnancies can be understood as subjection or choice, considering the multiple factors that express the phenomenon. There is a lack of studies to understand this phenomenon better in the lives of adolescents, and to provide guidance and appropriate interventions capable of having the desired educational and preventive effect.
