Abstract:
Asar[n]arenes, methoxy-substituted derivatives of pillar[n]arenes, have remained underexplored since their first synthesis in 2013. In this study, we achieved the first demethylation of asar[6]arene to give perhydroxy-asar[6]arene, which readily oxidized in air to form perhydroxy-asar[6]quinone. The structure and properties of this quinone were characterized by X-ray analysis, spectroscopy, and electrochemistry. Host-guest studies revealed entropy-driven binding with a dicationic ammonium guest.
