Abstract:
The HIV care adherence journey is a dynamic, complex phenomenon that represents more than counting the pills and clinic visits attended. Our study described the development and preliminary psychometric properties of a self-reported measure on the care adherence journey of persons with HIV (PWH). The Polit and Beck approach to measure development was used. A 36-item instrument was initially created and underwent two rounds of expert panel review. Psychometric testing was done with 302 PWH. The best-fitting model had a root-mean-square error of approximation of 0.088, a comparative fit index of 0.898, and a Tucker-Lewis index of 0.882. This model consisted of 7-factor structures and 27 items. The overall Cronbach's alpha of the instrument was 0.94. The HIV Care Adherence Journey Instrument is a culturally appropriate, valid, and reliable tool to assess PWH's experiences with their care adherence journey to promote patient-centered care.
