Area of Science:
- Mental Health Research
- Yoga Studies
- Psychology
Background:
- Positive mental health (PMH) is crucial for overall well-being.
- Trauma-Informed Yoga (TIY) is an emerging intervention for mental health.
- Understanding the impact of online TIY programs is important.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore the experiences of positive mental health (PMH) in adults participating in an online Trauma-Informed Yoga (TIY) program.
- To investigate the potential for TIY to foster self-empowerment.
- To identify key themes and skills developed during the TIY program.
Main Methods:
- A 10-week online Trauma-Informed Yoga (TIY) program with weekly sessions.
- Participants completed weekly diaries and semi-structured interviews.
- Thematic analysis was employed, guided by a model of empowerment.
Main Results:
- Participants reported increased self-empowerment and positive mental health (PMH).
- Key themes included enhanced capacity to slow down, increased self-awareness, and finding meaning in life.
- Participants felt skills gained were applicable beyond the yoga practice.
Conclusions:
- A 10-week online TIY program positively impacts PMH and empowers participants.
- A conceptual model of empowerment in TIY is proposed, emphasizing self-awareness and life choices.
- Further research is needed to validate these findings in diverse populations.
