Reliability of computed tomography: correlation with neuropathologic findings.

H Mori, C H Lu, L C Chiu

    AJR. American Journal of Roentgenology
    |May 1, 1977

    Summary

Cranial computed tomography (CT) shows high reliability for detecting lesions, especially larger ones. Smaller lesions (<1.5 cm) are more prone to false negatives, but surrounding edema can improve detection.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroradiology
    • Pathology
    • Medical Imaging

    Background:

    • Cranial computed tomography (CT) is a crucial diagnostic tool in neurology.
    • Accurate detection of intracranial lesions is vital for patient management.
    • Understanding the limitations of CT in detecting lesions of varying sizes is essential.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To correlate cranial computed tomography (CT) findings with autopsy results.
    • To determine the reliability of CT in detecting intracranial lesions.
    • To assess the impact of lesion size on CT detection accuracy.

    Main Methods:

    • Correlation of 129 intracranial lesions identified on CT with autopsy findings.
    • Analysis of 58 cases, focusing on lesion size and CT detection.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Inclusion of only good-quality CT scans for analysis.
  • Main Results:

    • No false positive cases were identified in good-quality CT scans.
    • False negative rates increased significantly with decreasing lesion size.
    • Lesions smaller than 0.5 cm were consistently missed by CT.

    Conclusions:

    • Cranial computed tomography (CT) demonstrates high specificity but variable sensitivity for lesion detection.
    • The current CT detector threshold appears to be between 0.5-1.5 cm.
    • Detection of smaller lesions (<1.5 cm) may be enhanced by the presence of surrounding edema.
