    Summary

    This pilot study found endotoxemia (endotoxin in the blood) in 25% of patients during and 65% after colonoscopy. However, this did not lead to bacteremia or adverse effects in patients with normal liver function.

    Background:

    • Colonoscopy is a common procedure for examining the large intestine.
    • Endotoxemia, the presence of endotoxin in the bloodstream, can be a concern following invasive procedures.
    • Understanding the clinical significance of endotoxemia after colonoscopy is important for patient safety.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the occurrence of endotoxemia following colonoscopy.
    • To determine the clinical significance and potential associations of post-colonoscopy endotoxemia.

    Main Methods:

    • A pilot study involving 20 patients undergoing colonoscopy.
    • Utilized the Limulus Lysate Method (LLM) assay to detect endotoxemia.
