Background:
With increase in life expectancies in recent decades, older adults are increasingly represented in Nepal's demography. However, there has been limited research on the factors adversely impacting older adults' quality of life and overall morbidity. This study intended to examine the effects of cigarette smoking on frailty and self-rated generalized health in a sample of community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults from Nepal.
Methods:
Data were collected from a population-based probability sample of 2155 individuals residing in 1361 households across 151 communities in Chitwan valley, a key south-central region in Nepal. Multilevel linear regression models were run to test the associations between cigarette smoking and frailty and self-rated generalized health, adjusting for demographic variables.
Results:
Results indicated that the number of cigarettes smoked per day was directly and significantly associated with increased frailty and poorer general health.
Conclusion:
Tobacco control efforts in Nepal may need to be expanded to include older adults, especially those from rural and socially disadvantaged communities.
