Rationale And Objectives:
We comprehensively evaluate the efficacy and safety of Ultrasound (US)-guided thermal ablation in the treatment of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) via a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Methods:
MEDLINE, EMBASE and PubMed databases were searched through October 2024, for studies reporting outcomes in patients with PTC treated with thermal ablation and followed up for at least 5 years. Data were extracted and methodological quality was assessed independently by two doctors according to the PRISMA guidelines. Six studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The sample size of patients totaled 2229. We evaluated the ablation efficacy by analyzing the volume reduction rate (VRR), complete disappearance rate and recurrence rate of PTC treated by thermal ablation. We analyzed all data using STATA version 17 (College Station, TX).
Results:
Additionally, pooled results showed the incidence of PTC local tumor recurrence, lymph node metastases and emergence of new cancers after ablation treatment were respectively 2% (95% CI: 1-3%), 0.0% (95% CI: 0.0-2%) and 0.0% (95% CI: 0.0-1%), and the incidence of complications after ablation treatment was 6% (95% CI: 1-14%) during a mean pooled 66-month follow-up.
Conclusions:
Overall, thermal ablation methods of low-risk PTCs are effective and safe for local tumor control over 5 years.
