Insomnia

79
Insomnia is a prevalent sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings during the night, and waking up too early without being able to return to sleep. People with insomnia often experience these disruptions at least three nights a week for at least one month. Chronic insomnia, which lasts for at least three months, can lead to increased anxiety, which in turn can worsen sleep difficulties, creating a cycle of sleeplessness and stress.

Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which...

The sleep cycle, an integral part of human health, consists of several stages with distinct characteristics and functions. It begins with a transition from wakefulness to sleep, known as the light sleep phase, followed by the restorative deep sleep phase, essential for physical recovery and growth. The cycle concludes with the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) phase, characterized by high brain activity and vivid dreaming. Insomnia, a prevalent sleep disorder, involves difficulty falling asleep, staying...

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Chronic insomnia disorder (CID) significantly impacts well-being, with cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) being a first-line treatment.
  • A subset of CID patients (approx. 20%) shows limited response to CBT-I, necessitating alternative therapeutic approaches.
  • Mindfulness-based interventions, including mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), have demonstrated efficacy in improving insomnia symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of therapist-guided internet-based MBCT for insomnia (iMBCT-I) in Chinese adults with CID.
  • To assess iMBCT-I as a potential novel psychotherapeutic option for individuals with chronic insomnia.
  • To explore the feasibility of future self-guided iMBCT-I applications.

Main Methods:

  • A two-armed, parallel-group randomized controlled trial involving 80 CID patients.
  • Participants will be randomized to either iMBCT-I or sleep hygiene education (SHE) at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Outcomes, including insomnia severity, will be assessed at baseline, week 8, and week 20, with intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis.

Main Results:

  • This section is not applicable as the abstract describes a study protocol and not results.
  • N/A
  • N/A

Conclusions:

  • This study protocol is the first to investigate the efficacy of therapist-guided iMBCT-I for CID.
  • Positive findings could support iMBCT-I as a valuable clinical option for insomnia.
  • This research may pave the way for developing self-guided iMBCT-I tools.
