Background:

Soft skills like communication, leadership, and teamwork are crucial for veterinary clinicians but often neglected in academic curricula.
Traditional role-playing effectively trains communication but struggles to incorporate leadership and teamwork components.

Purpose of the Study:

To design and evaluate a novel hierarchical role-playing activity for training and assessing soft skills in veterinary students.
To assess the impact of a focused soft skills lecture on student performance in simulated clinical consultations.

Main Methods:

Developed a role-playing simulation with undergraduate veterinary students in a hierarchical group structure (leader, veterinarians, client).
Assessed student performance before and after a soft skills lecture.
Collected participant feedback on the usefulness of the role-playing design.

Main Results:

Overall performance in veterinary roles significantly improved post-lecture.
No significant improvement was observed in leadership-related errors.
Students consistently rated the leader role lower than other roles.

Conclusions:

Hierarchically structured role-playing is an effective tool for enhancing soft skills in veterinary education.
This method facilitates self-learning and skill development in a controlled environment.
Further refinement may be needed to specifically improve leadership skills within this framework.
