Washing, Drying, and Ignition of Precipitates00:52

Washing, Drying, and Ignition of Precipitates

887
After filtration, the precipitate is washed to remove coprecipitated impurities and any remaining mother liquor. Colloidal precipitates, such as silver chloride, are washed with an electrolyte (such as dilute nitric acid) to prevent the peptization of the precipitate. In the case of slightly soluble precipitates, the wash solution contains a common ion to reduce solubility. Lead sulfate, which is slightly soluble in water, is washed with dilute sulfuric acid. Similarly, wash solutions may be...

Recrystallization: Solid–Solution Equilibria

1.1K
Recrystallization is a purification technique used to separate impurities from solid compounds. In this technique, no chemical reactions occur. Instead, it exploits physical properties only, specifically, the solubility differences between the desired compound and impurities, either at a single temperature or at different temperatures, and under other selected conditions. The solid-solution equilibrium (solubility equilibrium) of each component in the solution represents a binary phase...

DNA Isolation

192.6K
DNA from cells is required for many biotechnology and research applications, such as molecular cloning. To remove and purify DNA from cells, researchers use various methods of DNA extraction. While the specifics of different protocols may vary, some general concepts underlie the process of DNA extraction.

Crystal Growth: Principles of Crystallization

1.7K
Crystallization is a phase transformation process in which crystals are precipitated from a supersaturated solution or formed from other sources. During crystallization, atoms or molecules arrange themselves into a well-defined, rigid crystal lattice to minimize energy.
Initiating crystallization involves manipulating the concentration of the solute and the temperature of the solution. Since crystal growth occurs when the ratio of concentration and solubility of the solute in the solvent...

Extraction: Advanced Methods

432
Metal ions can be separated from one another by complexation with organic ligands–the chelating agent– to form uncharged chelates. Here, the chelating agent must contain hydrophobic groups and behave as a weak acid, losing a proton to bind with the metal. Since most organic ligands used in this process are insoluble or undergo oxidation in the aqueous phase, the chelating agent is initially added to the organic phase and extracted into the aqueous phase. The metal-ligand complex is...

Area of Science:

  • Chemical Engineering
  • Separation Science
  • Organic Chemistry

Background:

  • Indole is a valuable compound found in wash oil.
  • Previous research utilized methanol extraction and n-hexane re-extraction, yielding indole-concentrated oil (ICO) with 73.3 wt% indole.
  • A need exists for a more efficient purification process for indole from ICO.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and optimize a novel solute crystallization (SC) process for purifying indole from model ICO.
  • To investigate the effects of various experimental factors on indole purity and yield during SC.
  • To propose an integrated, highly efficient process for indole purification from wash oil.

Main Methods:

  • Preparation of model ICO based on actual wash oil components.
  • Solute crystallization (SC) process using n-hexane as the solvent.
  • Experimental investigation using a Pyrex batch crystallizer with a jacket.
  • Optimization of SC parameters including crystallization temperature, time, solvent ratio, and washing.

Main Results:

  • Optimal SC conditions yielded indole crystals with 99.5 wt% purity and 57.5% yield.
  • Key optimal parameters included a crystallization temperature of 283 K, 10 min crystallization time, and a solvent to model ICO volume ratio of 15.5.
  • The study demonstrated the feasibility of achieving high-purity indole through solute crystallization.

Conclusions:

  • Solute crystallization is a highly effective method for purifying indole from indole-concentrated oil.
  • The optimized SC process offers a significant improvement in indole purification efficiency.
  • This research contributes to a novel, integrated process for the efficient purification of indole from wash oil.
