Knowledge and Attitudes Towards Multimodal Brain Function Monitoring Among Nurses in the Intensive Care Unit

Background:
Multimodal brain function monitoring is becoming increasingly critical in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Aim:
To investigate ICU nurses' knowledge and attitudes towards multimodal brain function monitoring.
Study Design:
This cross-sectional study was conducted between May and September 2023 and included ICU nurses. The demographic characteristics, along with knowledge and attitude towards multimodal brain function monitoring, were assessed using a self-designed questionnaire.
Results:
A total of 263 valid questionnaires were enrolled, including 230 (87.45%) females, with a mean age of 30.47 ± 5.29 years. The median knowledge score was 11.00 (6.00, 13.00) (possible range: 0-24) and the mean attitude score was 31.34 ± 3.38 (possible range: 9-45). Multivariate logistic regression showed that having 5-10 years of clinical/nursing work experience in ICU (odds ratio [OR] = 2.963, 95% conflicts of interest [CI]: [1.003-8.748], p = 0.049), having more than 10 years of clinical/nursing work experience in ICU (OR = 7.718, 95% CI: [2.541-23.444], p < 0.001), involvement in research projects on multimodal brain function monitoring (OR = 2.100, 95% CI: [1.738-14.964], p = 0.003) and job satisfaction (OR = 1.449, 95% CI: [1.178-1.782], p < 0.001) were independently associated with adequate knowledge. Additionally, knowledge score (OR = 1.085, 95% CI: [1.029-1.145], p = 0.003) was independently associated with a positive attitude.
Conclusion:
Nurses in ICU exhibited suboptimal knowledge and attitude towards multimodal brain function monitoring.
Relevance To Clinical Practice:
It is crucial to develop targeted educational programmes to improve ICU nurses' knowledge and attitudes towards multimodal brain function monitoring, especially for those with fewer years of clinical experience. Additionally, encouraging involvement in research projects and promoting job satisfaction can further enhance their expertise and overall approach to clinical practice in this area.
