    Background:

    • Longstanding retinal detachments can present complex challenges in pediatric patients.
    • Traumatic retinal detachments require prompt and effective surgical management.

    Observation:

    • Two pediatric patients with presumed chronic traumatic retinal detachments underwent surgical repair.
    • Significant subretinal exudates and crystalline deposits were observed pre-operatively.

    Findings:

    • Surgical repair was technically successful in both cases.
    • Dramatic resorption of subretinal exudates and crystalline material occurred post-operatively.
    • Despite successful surgery and resorption, final visual acuity remained poor in both patients.

    Implications:

    • Longstanding traumatic retinal detachments may lead to irreversible visual impairment, even after successful surgical repair.
    • The presence of extensive subretinal exudates and crystalline material could indicate underlying retinal damage affecting visual outcomes.
    • Further research is needed to understand the long-term visual prognosis and potential interventions for such cases.
