Phase Contrast and Differential Interference Contrast Microscopy

Phase-Contrast Microscopes
In-phase-contrast microscopes, interference between light directly passing through a cell and light refracted by cellular components is used to create high-contrast, high-resolution images without staining. It is the oldest and simplest type of microscope that creates an image by altering the wavelengths of light rays passing through the specimen. Altered wavelength paths are created using an annular stop in the condenser. The annular stop produces a hollow cone of...

    Summary

We developed a new broadband nulling interferometer using a silicon nitride platform and a novel taper-section phase shifter (TSPS). This design significantly reduces phase shift error (PSE) and improves extinction ratio for high-performance photonic integrated circuits.

    Area of Science:

    • Photonics and Optical Engineering
    • Integrated Optics
    • Materials Science (Silicon Nitride/Silicon Dioxide)

    Background:

    • Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) are fundamental in photonic integrated circuits.
    • Broadband operation and low phase shift error (PSE) are critical for advanced MZI applications.
    • Existing MMI-MZIs face limitations in bandwidth and extinction ratio.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose and demonstrate a novel broadband nulling interferometer.
    • To introduce a new taper-section phase shifter (TSPS) for reduced PSE.
    • To enhance the extinction ratio of Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) on a Si3N4/SiO2 platform.

    Main Methods:

    • Design and simulation of a π-phase shift multimode interference Mach-Zehnder interferometer (πPS MMI-MZI).
    • Development of a broadband taper-section phase shifter (TSPS) with low PSE.
    • Experimental characterization of PSE and extinction ratio over a wide spectral range.

    Main Results:

    • Simulated PSE below 1° across 1450-1650 nm for TSPS.
    • Experimental demonstration of 1° PSE within a 190 nm bandwidth using a two-section TSPS.
    • Achieved experimental extinction ratios of 40 dB within a 100 nm bandwidth.

    Conclusions:

    • The novel TSPS enables significantly reduced PSE for broadband operation.
    • The πPS MMI-MZI demonstrates superior extinction ratios compared to conventional designs.
    • This work paves the way for high-performance broadband photonic integrated circuits.
