The ethical practice of dynamic psychotherapy with youth requires knowledge and thoughtful application of core ethical principles to the details of the case and the therapeutic relationship. In this article, we outline ethical, legal, and professionalism principles that undergird ethical child psychiatry practice, including those of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Code of Ethics (2023). Using illustrative cases, we then discuss these ethical principles as they relate to the psychodynamic therapist's relationship with the patient, parents or guardians, and outside entities, such as schools, health professionals, judicial and child welfare systems, and third-party payers.
