Background:

  • Evaluating return-to-duty rates in military personnel after THA can inform outcomes for civilians in demanding professions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the proportion of active-duty military personnel who return to duty after THA.
  • To identify demographic and surgical factors associated with return-to-duty rates post-THA.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart audit of 358 active-duty US military personnel undergoing primary THA (2017-2020).
  • Analysis included demographic data, surgical approach, indications, and outcomes (return to duty vs. medical separation).
  • Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify independent factors for return to duty.

  • 90% of patients returned to duty; 10% were medically separated due to hip issues post-THA.
  • Decreasing age was significantly associated with a higher risk of medical separation (OR 0.83 per year increase, p < 0.01).
