Randomized Experiments

The randomization process involves assigning study participants randomly to experimental or control groups based on their probability of being equally assigned. Randomization is meant to eliminate selection bias and balance known and unknown confounding factors so that the control group is similar to the treatment group as much as possible. A computer program and a random number generator can be used to assign participants to groups in a way that minimizes bias.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy of random versus block practice in PBBT for older adults.
    • To investigate the effects of PBBT on reactive and proactive balance.
    • To assess the impact of PBBT on cognitive performance.

    Main Methods:

    • Twenty community-dwelling older adults were randomized into either a random PBBT group or a block PBBT group.
    • Both groups underwent eight training sessions over four weeks, including a concurrent cognitive task.
    • Outcome measures included reactive stepping parameters, voluntary step tests, and cognitive performance, assessed pre- and post-training.

    Main Results:

    • Both PBBT groups demonstrated enhanced reactive stepping and reduced Center of Mass displacement post-training.

    • Cognitive improvements suggest a training transfer effect, irrespective of the PBBT method; however, results are preliminary due to the small sample size.
