We present the first genome assembly for the Common hop (Humulus lupulus), a key agricultural crop. This high-quality assembly provides a valuable resource for understanding hop genetics and breeding.
Area of Science:
- Genomics
- Plant Science
- Cannabaceae Biology
Background:
- The Common hop (Humulus lupulus) is an economically important plant species.
- A high-quality genome assembly is crucial for advancing genetic research and breeding programs in hops.
Purpose of the Study:
- To generate and present a comprehensive genome assembly for Humulus lupulus.
- To provide a foundational genomic resource for the scientific community.
Main Methods:
- Whole-genome sequencing of a female Humulus lupulus plant.
- Bioinformatic assembly and scaffolding of the genome sequence.
- Gene annotation using Ensembl.
Main Results:
- A genome assembly totaling 2,488.10 megabases was generated.
- The assembly is highly scaffolded into 10 chromosomal pseudomolecules, including the X sex chromosome.
- Gene annotation identified 32,487 protein-coding genes, with separate mitochondrial and plastid genome assemblies.
Conclusions:
- The presented genome assembly represents a significant advancement for Humulus lupulus research.
- This genomic resource will facilitate future studies in hop genetics, breeding, and the understanding of the Cannabaceae family.
