Abstract:
Apoptosis is the programmed death of cells that have lost their function, have been damaged, or are no longer needed in the organism. Genes that control this process are overexpressed in some tumors. Carvacrol, a terpenoid, has been shown to inhibit tumor growth and induce apoptosis in cancerous cells, increasing caspase activity, DNA fragmentation, and the expression of the Bax protein, while decreasing Bcl-2 expression. In this review, the effects of carvacrol on various cancers and its potential as a drug are summarized.
Insights
Carvacrol, a natural compound, inhibits tumor growth by triggering programmed cell death (apoptosis) in cancer cells. It enhances cancer cell death markers and shows potential as an anti-cancer drug.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Molecular Biology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Apoptosis is crucial for eliminating damaged or unnecessary cells.
- Overexpression of apoptosis-regulating genes is implicated in tumor development.
- Carvacrol is a natural terpenoid with known anti-cancer properties.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review the effects of carvacrol on various types of cancer.
- To summarize carvacrol's potential as a therapeutic agent for cancer treatment.
Main Methods:
- Literature review of studies on carvacrol and cancer.
- Analysis of carvacrol's molecular mechanisms in inducing apoptosis.
Main Results:
- Carvacrol inhibits tumor growth and induces apoptosis in cancer cells.
- It increases caspase activity and DNA fragmentation.
- Carvacrol upregulates Bax protein expression and downregulates Bcl-2 expression.
Conclusions:
- Carvacrol demonstrates significant potential as an anti-cancer drug.
- Its ability to induce apoptosis makes it a promising candidate for cancer therapy.

Cancer Therapies
However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy. Some cancer cells respond to one...
