Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate alterations in brain glymphatic function in POAG patients.
  • Utilize multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for glymphatic function assessment.

  • Structural and functional MRI scans were performed on 38 POAG patients and 25 healthy controls.
  • Assessed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation via choroid plexus (CP) volume.
  • Evaluated cortical glymphatic clearance using blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD)-CSF coupling.

Main Results:

  • POAG patients exhibited significantly larger CP volume compared to controls.
  • Reduced BOLD-CSF coupling strength was observed in the cortical regions of POAG patients.
  • Glymphatic function indicators negatively correlated with retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and positively with intraocular pressure.

Conclusions:

  • POAG patients demonstrate impaired brain glymphatic function.
  • This impairment may play a role in the neurodegenerative processes underlying POAG.
  • Findings suggest glymphatic dysfunction as a potential therapeutic target.
