Exploring monoamine oxidase B in nitric oxide dysregulation and vascular disease

Abstract:
Nitric oxide (NO) is crucial for maintaining vascular health, but recent studies suggest that monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) poses a significant threat to NO regulation. Traditionally recognized for breaking down neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, MAO-B is now implicated in vascular complications such as atherosclerosis. Upon activation, MAO-B generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which diminish NO levels and increase oxidative stress. This oxidative environment disrupts the bioavailability of NO, accelerating vascular damage and raising the likelihood of atherosclerosis. Moreover, MAO-B's impact reaches beyond the vascular system, affecting gut microbiota in ways that may alter microbial diversity and metabolism, further influencing vascular health. Future research could reveal the potential of targeting MAO-B through genetic and dietary strategies to preserve NO levels, offering new protection against atherosclerosis. This review highlights the need to integrate precision medicine into current vascular treatments to improve patient outcomes and understanding of NO's role.
