Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and hemolytic uremic syndrome are 2 index conditions of thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA). While conditions classified as TMA share common clinical characteristics, their underlying causes differ significantly. TMA is challenging to diagnose but life threating without proper and timely diagnosis and treatments. In this review, we discussed recent advances in understanding of the molecular basis, clinical epidemiology, and treatments of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and hemolytic uremic syndrome.
