Abstract:
Polysaccharides, are natural biological macromolecules, exhibiting anti-inflammatory effects to treat inflammatory pathologies via targeting body's defense system. Polysaccharides exhibit anti-inflammatory properties by influencing the host immunity either via direct interaction with immune cells or by altering intestinal microbiota composition. Meanwhile, molecular weight, monosaccharides composition, glycosidic bonds linkages, and branching features of polysaccharides have pivotal role in determining their anti-inflammatory properties. Recent studies on natural polysaccharides with anti-inflammatory effects highlighted diverse molecular mechanisms and targeted organs where these effects were observed. Moreover, structural characterization of these bioactive polysaccharides has also been discussed, emphasizing their role in modulating inflammation pathways. This article summarizes the research progress on the relationship between polysaccharides' structural properties and anti-inflammatory activity in recent years. The review aimed to deepen the understanding of structural features of polysaccharides with anti-inflammatory properties, offering valuable insights for the development and application of polysaccharide based anti-inflammatory drugs.
