Part I. Dermatologic Manifestations in Patients with Kidney Disease

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects 10% of the world's population and one in seven adults in the United States. Dermatologic manifestations are common in CKD patients and are often challenging to diagnose and treat due to a broad differential diagnosis and lack of consensus guidelines. Prompt recognition of dermatologic disease is crucial for timely management and avoidance of complications. In part one of this two-part continuing medical education series, we review dermatologic manifestations affecting CKD patients. Herein we discuss epidemiology, clinical and histopathological presentations, and management of common and unique dermatoses affecting this population, including CKD-associated pruritus, pigmentary changes, uremic frost, porphyria cutanea tarda, acquired perforating disorders, and hair and nail changes.
