Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine if occupational sedentary time is associated with cognitive function after adjusting for occupational cognitive complexity (OCC) and education.
  • To understand the role of OCC and education in the relationship between occupational sedentary time and cognitive performance.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study of 1821 participants from the Framingham Heart Study, excluding those with dementia, retired, or unemployed.
  • Cognitive function assessed using logical memory delayed recall (LMD), WAIS similarities (SIM), and Trail Making Test B-A.
  • Occupational sedentary time measured via self-report and accelerometry; OCC assessed using O*NET data. ANCOVA models used for analysis.

Main Results:

  • Higher occupational sedentary time initially correlated with better cognitive function (LMD, SIM, Trails B-A).
  • After adjusting for education and OCC, the association between occupational sedentary time and cognitive function (LMD, SIM) was attenuated and not statistically significant.
  • Occupational cognitive complexity (OCC) was also independently associated with higher cognitive function.

Conclusions:

  • The link between higher occupational sedentary time and better cognitive function is partially explained by higher OCC and education.
  • Occupations with higher cognitive complexity may foster cognitive resilience, even if they involve more sedentary behavior.
