Is tinnitus a psychological disorder?

Summary

This study found that personality traits do not significantly impact tinnitus perception or treatment response in male patients. Findings suggest tinnitus is not primarily a psychopathological disorder, challenging previous psychosomatic literature.

Background:

Previous psychosomatic literature suggests personality variables influence tinnitus perception and treatment response.
The role of psychological factors in tinnitus remains a subject of ongoing research and debate.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate personality correlates of subjective tinnitus in male patients.
To examine the relationship between psychological profiles and tinnitus characteristics.
To evaluate the potential impact of personality on tinnitus management.

Main Methods:

Forty-five male patients with chronic tinnitus underwent audiologic and otologic evaluations.
Standardized psychological assessments included the MMPI, Cattel's 16 PF, Rotter's Locus of Control, and Holmes and Rahe Life Stress Scale.
Correlational analyses were employed to link personality data with demographic, medical, and audiologic findings.

Main Results:

The study did not find the expected psychosomatic characteristics in the patient population.
Personality variables did not significantly correlate with tinnitus perception or treatment outcomes as predicted.
Results challenge the notion of tinnitus as a primarily psychopathological disorder.

Conclusions:

Tinnitus may not be predominantly a psychopathological disorder, contrary to some prior reports.
Conventional psychotherapy might offer limited efficacy for tinnitus management.
Standard audiologic treatment approaches may present more promising avenues for tinnitus relief.
