Tooth Anatomy01:21

Tooth Anatomy

1.1K
The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth.
The Crown, Neck, and Root
The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or...

Teeth

731
The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin...

Assessment of the Mouth01:26

Assessment of the Mouth

428
A thorough mouth assessment, including inspection and palpation of the lips, gums, tongue, tonsils, uvula, and pharynx, is crucial in detecting potential health issues. Diseases ranging from oral cancer to systemic conditions like diabetes could be identified early through careful oral examination. This article provides a detailed guide on conducting a comprehensive mouth assessment.
Mouth Inspection
The inspection begins with visually examining the mouth for symmetry, color, and size.

Issues And Trends In Healthcare Delivery System01:29

Issues And Trends In Healthcare Delivery System

5.9K
The issues and trends in healthcare delivery are constantly changing. The COVID-19 pandemic is one recent issue that wreaked havoc on healthcare systems, causing a shortage of healthcare workers, high demand for medicines and supplies, and increased medical expenditure due to a lack of insurance. Other issues include rising healthcare costs and care fragmentation.
Cost Containment
Payment for healthcare services has historically promoted adoption of costly and often unnecessary or inefficient...

The Availability Heuristic01:08

The Availability Heuristic

6.4K
A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

    Summary

Untreated dental disease costs the U.S. billions annually. This study analyzed emergency department visits for tooth disorders, finding a decrease in opioid prescriptions for pain relief.

    Area of Science:

    • Public Health
    • Epidemiology
    • Health Services Research

    Background:

    • Untreated dental disease results in significant annual productivity losses in the U.S. exceeding $45 billion.
    • Oral health issues can lead to severe pain, infections, and necessitate emergency care, particularly for individuals lacking routine dental access.
    • This report focuses on emergency department (ED) utilization for dental conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze trends in emergency department visits for tooth disorders between 2020 and 2022.
    • To identify demographic and payment characteristics associated with these visits.
    • To examine changes in pain management strategies for dental conditions in emergency settings.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS) for the years 2020-2022.

  • Analyzed ED visits with a primary reason or diagnosis related to tooth disorders.
  • Employed SAS-callable SUDAAN for estimate calculations and significance testing at the 0.05 level.
  • Main Results:

    • Tooth disorders prompted an average of 1,944,000 ED visits annually from 2020-2022.
    • Adults aged 25-34 represented the largest demographic group (29.2%) visiting EDs for dental issues. White non-Hispanic individuals constituted the majority (52.7%) of these visits.
    • Medicaid was the primary expected payment source for most visits (55.4%), and there was a notable decrease in opioid prescriptions (from 38.1% to 16.5%) for pain relief, with a corresponding increase in nonopioid analgesic use (from 20.0% to 38.4%).

    Conclusions:

    • Emergency departments are a significant site of care for dental conditions, highlighting gaps in access to routine dental services.
    • Demographic disparities exist in ED utilization for dental problems, with younger adults and specific racial/ethnic groups disproportionately affected.
    • There is a positive trend towards reduced opioid use and increased nonopioid analgesic use for dental pain management in emergency settings.
