Abstract:
The impact of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) on India's adult population is underestimated due to the lack of adequate surveillance measures. Despite increased uptake in childhood vaccination, adult immunization in India remains underutilized (<2%), particularly among older adults and immunocompromised individuals. The absence of dedicated vaccination centers and effective delivery platforms compounds the problem. There is an urgent need for a well-structured adult vaccination ecosystem in India, focusing on developing guidelines, public education campaigns to tackle myths and misconceptions, ensuring availability and access, and the creation of dedicated vaccination centers. The alarmingly low coverage for adult vaccination highlights the immediate need to set up dedicated adult vaccination clinics. This review outlines the steps toward the establishment of adult vaccination clinics. Such an initiative involves careful planning to address factors such as selecting appropriate vaccines, clinic layout, staffing, operating hours, and promotional strategies. Having well-established adult vaccination clinics in the community can help raise awareness and improve vaccine coverage.
