Attitudes01:54

Attitudes

29.8K
Attitude is our evaluation of a person, an idea, or an object. We have attitudes for many things ranging from products that we might pick up in the supermarket to people around the world to political policies. Typically, attitudes are favorable or unfavorable: positive or negative (Eagly & Chaiken, 1993). And, they have three components: an affective component (feelings), a behavioral component (the effect of the attitude on behavior), and a cognitive component (belief and knowledge;...

Essential Minerals for Bone Health01:31

Essential Minerals for Bone Health

4.5K
The minerals contained in all of the food we consume are essential for our organ systems. However, certain essential minerals, such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, and fluoride, largely affect bone health.
Calcium and Phosphorus
Calcium is a critical component of bones, especially in the form of calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate. Since the body cannot make calcium, it must be obtained from the diet. However, calcium cannot be absorbed from the small intestine without...

Urinary Tract Calculi IV: Nutrition Therapy and Prevention

36
Management of renal calculi focuses on effective strategies like tailored nutrition and hydration therapy. Adjusting diet and fluid intake reduces stone formation and recurrence, making these interventions simple yet powerful in kidney stone prevention and management.Understanding Kidney StonesKidney stones form when calcium, oxalate, uric acid, and cystine concentrate and crystallize in urine. Factors contributing to their formation include genetic predisposition, certain medical conditions,...

Teeth01:15

Teeth

731
The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin...

Cross-Sectional Research01:50

Cross-Sectional Research

11.9K
In cross-sectional research, a researcher compares multiple segments of the population at the same time. If they were interested in people's dietary habits, the researcher might directly compare different groups of people by age. Instead of following a group of people for 20 years to see how their dietary habits changed from decade to decade, the researcher would study a group of 20-year-old individuals and compare them to a group of 30-year-old individuals and a group of 40-year-old...

Surveys02:16

Surveys

15.4K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Public Health
  • Health Behavior Research

Background:

  • Water fluoridation is proven effective for preventing dental caries.
  • Limited research exists on U.S. adults' understanding of fluoride and tap water.
  • This study focuses on adults in Green Hill, Alabama.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of adults regarding fluoride.
  • To investigate tap water intake and consumption preferences.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was administered to 291 adults.
  • Data collected on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors concerning fluoride in water and toothpaste.
  • Water consumption preferences were also assessed.

Main Results:

  • High awareness (92.4%) of fluoride's role in cavity prevention.
  • Significant portion unaware fluoride doesn't aid gum health (18.3%).
  • Mixed attitudes towards fluoride in drinking water (42.8% agree/strongly agree) and toothpaste (82.6% support/strongly support).
  • Strong preference for bottled water (84.4%) over tap water, with distrust of tap water quality cited as a reason (36.9%).
  • Positive perception of fluoride in tap water linked to better knowledge.
  • Education level and fluoride awareness influenced attitudes.

Conclusions:

  • Further research is needed to understand adult water consumption habits.
  • Investigating underlying reasons for fluoride perceptions is crucial.
