Light Acquisition02:16

Light Acquisition

8.6K
In order to produce glucose, plants need to capture sufficient light energy. Many modern plants have evolved leaves specialized for light acquisition. Leaves can be only millimeters in width or tens of meters wide, depending on the environment. Due to competition for sunlight, evolution has driven the evolution of increasingly larger leaves and taller plants, to avoid shading by their neighbors with contaminant elaboration of root architecture and mechanisms to transport water and nutrients.

Multiple Regression01:25

Multiple Regression

3.2K
Multiple regression assesses a linear relationship between one response or dependent variable and two or more independent variables. It has many practical applications.
Farmers can use multiple regression to determine the crop yield based on more than one factor, such as water availability, fertilizer, soil properties, etc. Here, the crop yield is the response or dependent variable as it depends on the other independent variables. The analysis requires the construction of a scatter plot...

Microorganisms in Agriculture and Food industry01:27

Microorganisms in Agriculture and Food industry

415
Microorganisms play a crucial role in agriculture and the food industry, contributing to soil fertility, crop protection, and food production. Their functions range from nitrogen fixation and biopesticide production to fermentation and food preservation, making them indispensable to sustainable farming and food safety.Role in AgricultureNitrogen-fixing bacteria, such as Rhizobium (symbiotic) and Azotobacter (free-living), convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia through biological nitrogen...

Area of Science:

  • Agricultural Economics
  • Labor Studies
  • Sociology of Work

Background:

  • Undeclared work is a significant issue in the agricultural sector, frequently associated with the exploitation of agricultural laborers.
  • Estimating the extent of undeclared work is challenging due to its clandestine nature, prompting the development of various direct and indirect assessment methodologies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify the unique characteristics of undeclared work within the agricultural context.
  • To review methodologies employed in assessing the prevalence of undeclared agricultural labor.
  • To analyze the underlying reasons for the widespread nature of undeclared work, using Italy as a case study.

Main Methods:

  • Literature analysis of existing studies on undeclared work in agriculture.
  • Focus on indirect methods for estimating the phenomenon's extent.
  • Examination of macro-level factors contributing to undeclared work prevalence.

Main Results:

  • Agriculture is characterized by non-standard employment, illegal intermediation, poor working/housing conditions, and exploitation, particularly of immigrant workers.
  • Rural marginality, non-visibility, and a high incidence of work-related deaths are associated with undeclared agricultural labor.
  • Indirect methods have been predominantly used, with limited focus on individual-level behavioral motivations.

Conclusions:

  • Existing research on undeclared work (UW) in agriculture is deficient in exploring non-economic behavioral motivations at the individual level.
  • Further research is essential to gain a comprehensive understanding of undeclared work.
  • Enhanced knowledge is crucial for developing more effective policies to prevent and mitigate undeclared work in agriculture.
