    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Sociology
    • Human Sexuality

    Background:

    • Many women experience homosexual feelings before marriage but do not identify as homosexual.
    • Marriage can be a period of significant shifts in sexual orientation and identity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the pre-marital awareness, marital experiences, and post-marital sexual orientation shifts in married women with homosexual experiences.
    • To compare the marital experiences of these women with those of married homosexual men.

    Main Methods:

    • Survey of 45 women (average age 35.9) regarding demographics, pre-marital homosexual experiences, marital problems, and sexual orientation.
    • Utilized Kinsey-type ratings to assess sexual behavior and fantasies.

    Main Results:

    • 89% of marriages reported sexual difficulties, primarily lack of sexual desire for spouse (62%).
    • Pre-marriage, participants were predominantly heterosexual in behavior and fantasy.
    • Significant shifts toward homosexual orientation occurred during and especially after marriage, with a majority relating exclusively to women post-marriage.

    Conclusions:

    • Women with homosexual experiences are more likely to marry young, unaware of their orientation, and experience marital conflict due to bisexual orientation and sexual dissatisfaction.
    • These women tend to terminate marriages earlier compared to married homosexual men.
