A new photometric method accurately assesses frontal plane lower limb alignment (FLLA) noninvasively. This reliable tool uses easily palpable landmarks, offering a promising alternative for FLLA measurement.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedics
- Biomechanics
- Medical Imaging
Background:
- Frontal plane lower limb alignment (FLLA) is crucial for assessing musculoskeletal health.
- Current methods for FLLA assessment may be invasive or less accessible.
- A reliable and accurate noninvasive tool for FLLA is needed.
Purpose of the Study:
- To establish the reliability and accuracy of a novel photometric method for FLLA assessment.
- To compare photometric FLLA measurements with radiographic measurements.
Main Methods:
- Sixty-seven subjects (11-47 years) participated.
- A photometric method using anterior superior iliac spines and femoral condyles was developed.
- Measurements were compared to standard radiography (hip-knee-ankle angle) and assessed for reliability (intrarater, interrater, test-retest).
Main Results:
- The photometric method showed high correlation (r=0.97) with radiographic hip-knee-ankle angle.
- Excellent intrarater (ICC>0.972), interrater (ICC=0.991), and test-retest (ICC=0.980) reliability were observed.
- The photometric method yielded results comparable to radiography, with a mean difference of 3.9° varus.
Conclusions:
- The photometric method is a promising, reliable, and accurate noninvasive tool for FLLA assessment.
- Its use of palpable landmarks like the anterior superior iliac spine is advantageous.
- Further validation in larger, diverse cohorts is recommended.
