Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

153
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

97
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture

97
Adolescents from ethnic minority backgrounds face a multifaceted journey in forming their identities, shaped by the intersections of cultural expectations and personal exploration. For these adolescents, identity formation involves not only typical developmental challenges but also navigating the perceptions and attitudes of the majority culture. As they grow, adolescents in ethnic minority groups often become increasingly aware of stereotypes, social biases, and discrimination, all of which...

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychology
  • Mental Health Interventions

Background:

  • Stress sensitivity is a key target for preventive mental health interventions.
  • Resilience Training (RT) is a 4-session group intervention using mindfulness skills.
  • RT has previously shown reductions in psychopathology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the mechanisms underlying RT's effectiveness.
  • To test if RT reduces psychopathology by decreasing emotion reactivity.
  • To examine associated changes in hippocampal-frontal connectivity.

Main Methods:

  • An open trial of RT was conducted with 103 young adults experiencing psychotic experiences and/or depression symptoms.
  • Measures included transdiagnostic symptoms, emotion reactivity, and mindfulness skills.
  • fMRI data were collected from 41 participants before and after RT.

Main Results:

  • RT increased mindfulness skills and decreased symptoms and emotion reactivity (P < .02).
  • Reductions in symptoms were fully mediated by decreased emotion reactivity.
  • Decreased emotion reactivity correlated with increased hippocampal-dorsolateral prefrontal cortex connectivity (P = .032).

Conclusions:

  • RT may improve mental health by enhancing stress management capabilities.
  • Mindfulness-based interventions can reduce emotion reactivity and alter brain connectivity.
  • Further research is needed to confirm RT's preventive potential for disabling mental illnesses.
